The heavens tell about the glory of God.
The skies show that his hands created them.
Day after day they speak about it.

But they don’t speak or use words.
No sound is heard from them.

These words of the psalmist recently came to mind while sitting on our back deck. As I gazed heavenward at the clear blue skies above the mountain top, I marveled again at the beauty of the created world around me. Later that evening as looked upon the stars that dotted the night sky, my thoughts turned to our Creator--the heavens truly declare the glory of God. All around us we see His handiwork.
King David writes: I think about the heavens. I think about what your fingers have created. I think about the moon and stars that you have set in place. What are human beings that you think about them? (Psalm 8:3-4 - NIRV) To think that the One who created all there is would connect and care of us as human beings boggled the mind of the king, and yet his own experience and our experience validates the truth that God sees and cares deeply about us.
David would say in Psalm 139:1-6:
Lord, you have seen what is in my heart.
You know all about me.
You know when I sit down and when I get up.
You know what I’m thinking even though you are far away.
You know when I go out to work and when I come back home.
You know exactly how I live.
Lord, even before I speak a word, you know all about it.
You are all around me, behind me and in front of me.
You hold me safe in your hand.
I’m amazed at how well you know me.
It’s more than I can understand.
Two thoughts from David's words speak to me in this season of my life. First, I find a measure of peace knowing that the Lord has seen what is in my heart. God knows that though I struggle at times, at a heart level, my desire is to trust Him and serve Him faithfully. Secondly, I am comforted to know He holds me safe in His hand. My security comes from knowing He is my safe place, my hiding place. When the fears and uncertainties of this world threaten to overwhelm me I have One to whom I can turn, who is my refuge and strength.
