Psalm 119:105
The Psalmist also tells us, His Word is eternal. The word translated ‘eternal’ or ‘forever’ is the Hebrew word olam. It means ’everlasting’, ‘perpetual’, ‘unending’. It is a term that speaks of that which has no beginning or ending, that continues on forever. Used in this way in Psalm 119:89, it means that what God has said/ declared has always been, is, and will always be true. It was true yesterday, it’s still true today, and it will be true tomorrow. There will never be a time when God’s Word ceases to be true or relevant and therefore, it is completely trustworthy. Martin Luther once said, The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold of me. The Bible is not antique or modern. It is eternal.
The third truth that we find in this text is that the Word of God 'stands firm', it is settled, firmly fixed, it cannot be moved. We live in a very unsettled world. Even in the best of times, we experience some measure of unsettledness in our lives. We move from one place to another, one job to another, friends come and go, promises are made and broken, a sudden illness comes and any sense of security we had quickly fades. Against this reality God’s Word stands firm. In the midst of all that’s transient and temporary, we can hold on to the Word of God and find in it a lasting sense of security and confidence.
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for your faith in His excellent Word!
My friends at Valley, build your life on the unshakable foundation of God’s Word!
