Rethinking Retirement

3/22/2014

Do you remember the television commercial from a few years ago, ‘Freedom 55’; a retirement plan that would give us the freedom to retire early and enjoy the fruits of our labour?  With the first wave of baby-boomers now into their retirement years and with many at Valley who are now well into the season of retirement, perhaps it is time to rethink our retirement plans.

In his book Rethinking Retirement John Pipers observes that most of the suggestions that this world offers us for our retirement years are bad ideas.  They call us to live in a way that makes this world look like our treasure.

Be careful of buying into the lie; be careful of becoming self-absorbed.  Jesus would say, be careful,  for where you treasure is, there your heart will be also.  (Matthew 6:21).  Be careful!  As we grow older there is a danger in fading from our commitment to Christ; in our worship and service of the One who is truly our Treasure!

Piper observes:  Finishing life to the glory of Christ means resolutely resisting the typical American dream of retirement.  It means being so satisfied with all that God promises to be for us in Christ that we are set free from the cravings that create so much emptiness and uselessness in retirement.  Instead, knowing that we have an infinitely satisfying and everlasting inheritance in God just over the horizon of life makes us zealous in our few remaining years here to spend ourselves in the sacrifices of love, not the accumulation of comforts.

The  Psalmist would pray (71:18)…even to old age and grey hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come.

And the Apostle Paul would write:  Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.  Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.  (Galatians 6:9-10)

I want to exhort you again to stay faithful!  Stay faithful to His church and in serving Christ and blessing others in His name.  Don’t bail out!  Don’t fade down the stretch!  As Piper observe:  Finishing life to the glory of Christ means using whatever strength and eyesight and hearing and mobility and resources we have left to treasure Christ and in that joy to serve people.

May God give us a passion in our final years to spend our days living in such a way that He is revealed to be our highest treasure and our ultimate source of joy and satisfaction.  The key says Piper to finishing life to the glory of Christ…we must be satisfied in Him.

He must be our Treasure!

One Year Later

My mind is travelling back in time to a year ago today when I found myself sitting on a bus bound for Vincente Guerrero, Mexico.  For over a year plans had been made for a Team from Valley to engage in a house-building project in Mexico.  Plans were developed, our people responded generously and the Team was a day ahead of me, already on the build site.

Days before our departure, I had privilege of being with our friend Nick Dikur as he passed peacefully from this life to life eternal.  We shared in a wonderful celebration of his life on Sunday afternoon and reminded ourselves of the hope we have in Christ and then I headed for the aiport to make the necessary connections to join the team in Mexico.

Two flights, 2 cabs, 4 buses, two border crossings, two military checkpoints and several “I’m sorry, I don’t speak Spanish” responses later, I stepped of the bus in Vincente Guererro where I was greeted by Asher and Susanne.  We drove a few miles north to reconnect with the Team.

In just four days the Team from Valley erected a simple structure that would become a home for Nicolasas and her family.  It was incredible experience!  (You can read about our Blog – March 2013.)

A year later at Small Group last Wednesday night a group of friends sat around the table and celebrated again the life and memory of one who has gone before.  Amdist all the laughter and tears, we were reminded just how powerful it is be ‘in community’ with one another; to share life together!

Later that night  I received an email from Asher Motola, in response to a question I had raised with him.  I had sent him the following:  It's  hard to believe it's been a year since the Team from Valley travelled with you to Mexico.  How is Nicolasas and her family doing a year later?  I'm curious how you 'measure' the 'fruit' of your ministry...what do you see a year later...year's later as you faithfully serve?

This is what Asher wrote in response:

Hi Ken, Nicolasas is doing better. My colleague went out to see her two weeks ago and brought groceries to her. The place is looking cleaner than it ever has.  A lady from the outreach department at the Orphanage has been spending time with her and giving her basic life lessons regarding hygiene, housekeeping, etc.

The little girls are in school and the birth certificates for the other kids are in process.
The pig (remember the pig near the outhouse?) was sold a couple of months ago - it had reached a good, marketable size.

She is definitely one for whom the investment is paying off in a measurable and visible way. We don't always see such obvious fruit.

A year later, I continue to marvel that I was able to part of that experience!  I was blessed to part of an amazing team of men and women who gave themselves wholeheartedly to this project.  And I am blessed to be part of such a generous, caring church family!

Thank you for making an eternal investment in the life of Nicolasas and her family!  Thank you for being the church to one another!

And to my friend, Nick, ‘goodbye, until we meet again’!

What a day, what day that is going to be!

The Hope of the World

It has been over 50 years now, since a preacher from the southern states stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C and addressed the crowd gathered there.

I say to you today, my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream.  I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but by the content of their character.

Those words from Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. inspired the civil rights movement of the 60's and 50 years later, racial barriers continue to fall.

Nearly 2000 years ago a Jewish Rabbi made a similar declaration before his rag-tag band of followers.  (Matthew 16:13-18)

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

“But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.  And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

From the time of His ascension to His return in power and glory Jesus said I am going to be about one thing; I am going to build of my church.  I have dream, Jesus said; a dream in which people are radically devoted to God and committed to one another as they live out their lives in community, and dedicated to reaching those outside the community of faith. I have a dream, a dream of building prevailing churches.

My friends at Valley as we do church together, as we do life together, I just want to remind us of the centrality of the church in the world today.  I want to call you agian to be faithful in serving the church because the church of Jesus Christ is the hope of the world!
