Standing on the promises that cannot fail
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail
By the living Word of God, I shall prevail
Standing on the promises of God
Imagine seeking to live by faith without the promises of God; His words to us that give us assurance and hope and comfort and strength. The Psalmist declares, Your kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The Lord is trustworthy in all he promises and faithful in all he does. (Psalm 145:13) How reassuring it if or us to know, to have experienced the trustworthiness of God's promises, His faithfulness in all He does.
In case we are tempted to minimize the promises of God, the Psalmist reminds us in Psalm 119 that God's promises are our source of comfort. My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life. (50) May your unfailing love be my comfort, according to your promise to your servant. (76) It is the promises of God that sustains us and gives us hope. Sustain me, my God, according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. (Psalm 119:116)
The Bible is filled with God's promises to us; some of which are exceedingly precious to us. There are particular promises that speak deeply into each of our lives. As I thought about the importance of God's promises in my own walk of faith, three such promises immediately come to mind.
First, I think of the promise of salvation, God has freely given me in Christ. The promise of Romans 10:13 is this: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. I can still recall the moment this promise became real to me; God was indeed faithful to His promise. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12) See what great love the Father has lavished on us (me), that we (I) should be called children (a child) of God! And that is what we are (I am)! (1 John 3:1) 1 John 2:25 tell us, this is what he promised us—eternal life. Whoever has the Son has life. (1 John 5:12) This is God's promise to us and it is forever secure, for He is faithful to His word.
A second promise that speaks to me is the promise of God's presence. I hold to the promise given to Moses: “My Presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.” (Exodus 33:14) I live with a sense of calm assurance because, The Lord is my shepherd...He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul. (Psalm 23:1) God is my refuge, my hiding place. Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” (Psalm 91:1-2)
A third promises that is meaningful to me is the promise of strength, courage and hope. The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1) When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise—in God I trust and am not afraid. (Psalm 56:3-4) I live with the same promise given to Asher in Deuteronomy 33:25, your strength will equal your days.
If I were to keep writing I could fill page after page with more of the promises from God; I could post again and again my testimony of God's faithfulness to me; that He is a promise-keeping, covenant-keeping, ever faithful God and He is good!
